The Campaign
The Transfusion Question was commissioned by the Clinical Excellence Commission and the National Blood Authority in 2008. It was created by advertising agency 303. In-depth qualitative research was conducted prior to the launch and the multi channel campaign was created to promote discussion, debate and seek advice from senior consultants about the appropriate use of red blood cell transfusions.
The impetus for this debate is due to high levels of concern relating to:
- Inappropriate prescribing and dosing of red cells in haemodynamically stable patients which do not meet the NH&MRC/ASBT Guidelines
- Inadequate patient consent processes in relation to risks associated with red cell transfusion
- The immunomodulatory effects of red cells which can lead to increase in infection and increase in hospital stay
